It all began with the little movie that could. The Love Bug was 1968’s biggest box-office hit: It paved the way for three sequels about the Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own, and this box set containing all four films. The first is the best, and the two-disc Special Edition contains a full tank of features, including archival footage of the film's production and publicity ("Love Bug Day at Disneyland"), and breezy commentary by stars Dean Jones, Buddy Hackett, and an endearingly perky Michele Lee. In Herbie Rides Again, the plucky car comes to the aid of Helen Hayes, who is being menaced by Keenan Wynn's Alonzo Hawk, the villain from the Flubber films. Dean Jones is back in the driver's seat in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, in which Don Knotts gets the most mileage out of his sidekick role. Last, and least, is Herbie Goes Bananas, which benefits from some such expert character actors as Cloris Leachman and Harvey Korman. Each of the films has its charms, as well as kid-savvy freewheeling slapstick and stunts. But the real star is Herbie (whom we suspect will inevitably live again in the unleaded form of a New Beetle). Whether redeeming a washed-up driver or foiling diamond thieves and smugglers, our wheelie-popping, rubber-burning hero never runs out of gas.
